Amsterdam upset 4-time FIBA 3x3 World Tour winners on Day 1 at Debrecen Masters 2020

DEBRECEN (Hungary) – Amsterdam (NED) recorded their first-ever win against Novi Sad (SRB) in the pool stage of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Debrecen Masters on August 29, 2020.

THE GAME

Since 2018, Amsterdam were 0-4 against 3x3 powerhouse Novi Sad (SRB). But for the return of FIBA competitions after a 5-month break due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Dutch team finally got over the hump in 21-18 win. The dynamic Dimeo van der Horst had a team-high 8 points and added 5 rebounds. Amsterdam also held the number one player in the world Dusan Bulut to just 2 points.

THE TEAMS

Amsterdam were one of 4 undefeated teams after opening day as they went on to thrash Debrecen 22-10. Liman (SRB) and NY Harlem (USA) also won their 2 games before the limit. Riga (LAT) could not hit blackjack in their first game but won their 2 games with an 8.5 point average.

THE PLAYERS

Ever heard of the player value? This is the 3x3 metric for a player’s statistical contribution on the court.

  • The number 2 player in the world Nauris Miezis (Riga, LAT) ranked 1st after Day with 19.4 after a monster 11 points – 8 highlights game against Piran (SLO).
  • Stefan Kojic (Liman, SRB) was 2nd with 15.2.
  • Aron Roijé (Amsterdam, NED) had the only triple five (8 pts – 6 rbds and 5 highlights) against Debrecen (HUN) and finished 3rd with 13.8.

 MORE STATS

  • Ignas Vaitkus (Utena Uniclub, LTU) topped all scorers with 18 points.
  • His teammate Darius Tarvydas and the former number one player in the world Stefan Stojacic (Liman, SRB) had the only 2 Tissot Buzzer Beaters of the day.
  • For the first time ever an Austrian team competes at the World Tour, Team Graz pulled off an upset against Humpolec Bernard (CZE) and secured a spot in the quarter-finals against Riga (LAT). Interestingly several players of Team Graz beat the entire Riga team last year when they represented the Austrian (and the Latvian) national teams at the FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup 2019... in Debrecen.
  • Liman's 21-11 beating of Humpolec Bernard (CZE) with 3’31” left on the game clock currently leads the way in the Tissot Fastest Game standings. Remember there’s 2,000 USD for the winners of the Tissot Fastest Game of each Masters this season.
